Australia head coach Michael Cheika says he received dangers from Israel Folau’s controversial media post amid the fallout.
The 30-year-old devout Christian had his contract terminated by Rugby Australia in April for composing”hell awaits” gay men and women.
Full-back Folau, that won 73 caps, is suing the governing body, asserting his contract was ended.
“People were saying all kinds of stuff,” Cheika said.
“Just threats I had been getting; people on the street, some to my face, a few at a few games. It was just crazy things.”
Folau – who’s seeking #5.6m (AU $10m) in compensation, an apology along with a return into the federal side – escaped penalty for similar anti-gay remarks this past calendar year.
Cheika, whose side start their Rugby World Cup campaign against Fiji Saturday in Japan, stated the governing body had to act in the best interests of the team.
Before Folau’s sacking in April, Cheika stated he”would not be able to” select him, adding”the team is still king”.
“I’m not disappointed at the person [Folau] because if that is what he believes, and that is where his enthusiasm is, I will never tell a person to conceal it,” he added from the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I may not agree with everybody, but I would never need someone to never state what they feel. I am no person to judge.
“Another disappointing part is that we lost one of the best players; a man who I helped come back. I wouldn’t say I am responsible for what has occurred. It is just life. But I had to do exactly what was needed for the team.”
Cheika denied claims the Wallabies camp was divided following the sacking of Folau but revealed crew meetings were held to be able to proceed forward.
“Obviously, we had to tackle it,” he said. “We spoke about it in little classes, then one , after which in the group environment together, so everybody was clear about what exactly was happening.
“Then we got on with firm, which can be representing Australia at footy. That’s what we’re here to perform.”
