Champion Golfer of the Year Shane Lowry Is Becoming the latest player to join the group of Honorary Life Members in the European Union.
Where ignored Tommy Fleetwood to the final day to storm to a victory lowry was presented in July, his big title.
The European Tour champions would be the 56th participant to take up Honorary Life Membership since the system was introduced in 1978, following on from Patrick Reed being granted the status this season.
“It is pretty cool to obtain this award,” Lowry said. “When you start playing golf when you’re a kid you don’t understand how good you may be, or even when you get started acting as a master. I didn’t know that I would get for this day, so it’s quite cool.
“I’ve always joined a wonderful list of names, which is fairly great too. My heart lies with The European Tour. I’ll stay a member. I enjoy coming back and that I really like playing in events in this way, so it’s an extreme privilege to receive this”
The important breakthrough in Royal Portrush of lowry is one of two victories on the Tour in 2019, with all the Irishman winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January.
The 32-year-old received the award at Wentworth, the fourth largest Rolex Series event of the season.
“Shane’s incredible victory at Royal Portrush will be recalled among the iconic performances from the Championship’s storied history,” Pelley said.
“Shane is a great character and I believe you once you look at the remarkable reception he enjoyed round the island of Ireland in the week after his triumph, along with the warmth and cheer on social media internationally, which shows you just how popular he’s in the game. He’s also a superb ambassador for the European Tour, and it is hence a really worthy recipient of this honor.”
