Redskins happy to have RBs who ‘want to be the guy’

Even though the majority of the focus heading toward Washington Redskins training camp will be on the quarterbacks, the running backs up gear for a tight battle of their own.
Adrian Peterson is set to be direct dog, but the Redskins consider the competition for carries will buoy the group. Derrius Guice, coming off a torn ACL, is expected to be ready for training camp, and when he’s regained the form he showed last offseason could carve a big function. Chris Thompson, who dealt with an injury-marred 2018, should play with the pass-catching role once again, and with queries at recipient, that function could be vital. Rookie Bryce Love probably won’t be prepared for the beginning of the year, but down the street could siphon off carries. And Samaje Perine that is 23-year-old remains a backup option.

When healthy, the team appears deep on paper. There’s an opportunity that the competition could upset the apple cart, particularly given the fact that Peterson is not a back that normally shares the load. The coaching team, however, considers the competition will bring out the best all around.
“It’s upped our game, and these guys get a bit upset when all the sudden a guy gets a few reps and they are looking at me like,’Coach, if is my turn?'” Running backs coach Randy Jordan said, each the group’s official website. “It makes it easy to coach when you have got a great room like that.”
Additional Jordan:”You want those men which are really, very excited and take this to heart, like,’Hey, I need to be the guy.'”
Jordan has insisted a 50/50 or 60/40 split between Peterson and Guice will be perfect, even though All Day hasn’t shared the load successfully in that manner. If Thompson remains healthy, the Redskins have a formulation to get a running back committee that could do damage.
If rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins wins the starting QB gig out of camp, then the RB trio will likely be of greater import. Irrespective of who lines up under center, expect the Redskins to start the season relying on the ground game to spearhead the offense until the pass attack rounds into form.
“Hopefully we have equilibrium. That’s always the secret,” coach Jay Gruden said. “When we had been effective last year with Alex [Smith] early in the season, it’s because we had been moving the football, making our third downs, mixing at the run, pass and play action. That’s when most offenses are at their best.”
