As he opened up a commanding direct at the halfway stage bob MacIntyre found an excess gear.
After first-round leader Paul Casey struggled to a 73 in conditions at the Green Eagle Golf Club, despite making only one birdie on the five par-fives MacIntyre took benefit of this day weather that was more friendly and terminated a great 63.
The Scot stormed to the top of the leaderboard on 11-under par, four obvious of Bernd Ritthammer, although Casey is off the pace as he continued to fight a tough layout in addition to a throat infection.
MacIntyre has had a rookie season in the Tour, together with finishes in May and a tie for sixth in The 148th Open at Royal Portrush, and he is currently in prime place to land his success.
The talented left-hander’s scorecard featured some notable 11 threes – six of them for birdie, and even though he was unable to pick up shots at the long 15th or 16th, he hit the final green in 2 and readily two-putted for his seventh birdie of the day.
“I stuck to my game plan,” stated the written 23-year-old. “It is probably the best I have driven a chunk – maybe this year. It’s not going straight, it is going miles. I don’t know what I am doing so I am only going to attempt to continue to do it but it’s working.
“I can only control what I can control and that’s swinging the golf club for each person shot. That’s all I’m going to do over the weekend too and I can keep the decent scores coming. Especially when it’s my first time with such an outcome it is going to be tough.
“I will have to learn from this experience, I am just doing the perfect things about the course, doing the ideal things off the program. I’m nice and relaxed and everything in house has been brilliant so I’m in the ideal mindset for going out there this weekend.”
Ritthammer gave the home fans a lot to cheer late in the day when he birdied three of the last four holes to cover an blemish-free 66 which increased him to seven under and alone in second position, with Casey alongside Matthias Schwab and Guido Migliozzi around five under.
Casey dropped further shots at 14 and 13 and began with a bogey, before rebounding back at the brief fifth with a two from a second bogey at the next, however he regrouped and clawed two shots back at 18 and 15.
He missed a chance although he was happy about the set up of this hard course but he had been pleased with his fightback.
“I am really very pleased with a single over because it’s such a tricky golf course,” Casey explained. “Attitude is the secret, I had a good attitude and there were choices to make birdies if you stay with it, but it is very tricky.
“Not every class ought to be easy weekly, but if it had been me I’d move up the temptations here since you’re earning far more interest into the way this program is played. Risks will be more and I’d like to find guys going to it. At this time it is very, very difficult, almost kind of defensive, which isn’t so enjoyable.”
Xander Schauffele, the highest-ranked participant in the field this week, made a spirited reaction to his opening 73 since he shot into red numbers with a four-birdie 69 that raised the world No 9 to two under alongside Thomas Pieters, that discovered water at the past and ran up a seven to sign to get a unsatisfactory 72.
Former Masters champion Patrick Reed was two over four over for the tournament and staring in a cut that is missed, but he dug deep to salvage a 72 which got him firmly.
However, his American Matt Kuchar would be flying home following a straight 74 that began with three consecutive bogeys.
