Lifestyles like Williams’s (and sometimes even Bauer’s) will not be right for me personally: My father’s status as single provider made him the Tyrant-in-Chief. My mom had no money of her own—and no will to clean and scrounge within the types of blue- or pink-collar jobs that would’ve wrung her away, but at the very least provided her, and me personally, set up a baseline independency.
